Just 25 miles southwest of Thunderbird lies the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, one of the nation's signature desert parks. Nearly 800,000 acres of rugged Mojave Desert terrain have been set aside here to preserve the otherworldly Joshua tree (also known as the Yucca tree) forests, as well as striking rock formations, and hundreds of species of birds.

An often overlooked natural wonder near Thunderbird are the Indian Canyons, which support the world's largest and second largest California fan palm oases. The canyons are considered sacred to the local Cahuilla tribe, and contain several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

You don't have to venture out into the desert to find great attractions here either. The Palm Springs metro area surrounding Thunderbird is a tourism mecca with dozens of annual arts festivals, including the Palm Springs International Film Festival, and the Coachella Music Festival. and endless shopping opportunities. Enthusiasts of mid 20th century art and design appreciate the area for its many vintage clothing and furniture shops. Local cities are also recognized as the origin of desert modernism, an attractive building style popular in the 1950s.

But if all you want is golf, Thunderbird is the place to be. Northern Coachella is blanketed with more than 200 hundred golf courses, including the PGA West golf and residential complex, and a huge desert golf area north of Palm Desert.
